Install fire safety upgrades in your home renovations
(NC)—While many Canadians don't think twice about repainting their home or completing kitchen improvements every 10 years, the same consideration is often not given to a more critical element of household peace of mind: smoke alarms. (NC)—While many Canadians don't think twice about repainting their home or completing kitchen improvements every 10 years, the same consideration is often not given to a more critical element of household peace of mind: smoke alarms.

A research study conducted by firefighters and a leading fire safety product manufacturer zeroed in on the fact that most Canadians are dangerously unaware that the sensors used to detect smoke and carbon monoxide in alarms weaken over time, and this requires that alarms must be replaced. Manufacturers advise that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms be replaced every 10 and 7 years respectively.

Other research findings included:

• Consumers think "hard-wired" alarms… those units wired right into a home's electrical system… last forever. They do not.

• Homeowners want to be able to easily identify how old their alarms are. This can be done by checking date stickers found on current models.

• Consumers prefer smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms with long life (10-year) or easy-to-replace front-load batteries AND buttons that allow them to "Hush" nuisance alarms adjacent to cooking areas.

More information about smoke alarm replacement guidelines is available online at www.SafeAtHome.ca.
