Don't let laundry room noise disrupt work, pleasure or rest in other rooms
(NC)—Not all disturbing household noises come from the outside. For people working at home or those just seeking the quiet life, the sound of whirling machines and running water emanating from the laundry room can disrupt peace and quiet.

"Noise, whether coming from inside or outside your home, can greatly affect productivity. By properly installing QuietZone acoustical batts and resilient channels as part of an interior wall or floor system, unwanted noises can be reduced," says Chris Adamkowski, an insulation expert for Owens Corning Canada. Using the principles of noise control and making a few smart home renovations can help keep disturbing noises from disrupting the household.

Principles of noise control

The three basic principles of noise control are: block, break and absorb sound vibration.

Block – Drywall is the first line of defense against noise. It will help to block out unwanted sounds. Non-hardening Acoustic caulking can also help block sound vibration.

Break – Resilient channels or QuietZone Acoustic Studs help break up the sound waves that pass through the drywall by limiting the paths through which sound vibrations can travel.

Absorb – Installing specifically-designed acoustic insulation in interior walls or between floors, such as QuietZone acoustic batts, can help absorb sound energy and help decrease the amount of noise transmitted between rooms.

Insulating around pipes using Owens Corning's Multi-Purpose insulation will minimize the irritating sound of running water. To further eliminate laundry room noise, consider placing a door sweep beneath the door and use resilient pads under washing machine and clothes dryer to prevent vibrational sound energy from being transmitted through the floor.
